The first information about the journalist’s death was provided by Jarosław Jurczyszyn, head of the commission for freedom of speech at the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada. The politician referred to the message that the woman’s parents allegedly received. However, he later deleted the message and wrote another one that the reports should be verified – this post also disappeared from the Internet.
Ultimately, the tragic news was confirmed on Thursday evening by the Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinec, as well as the representative of military intelligence (HUR) Andriy Yusov.
Wiktoria Roszczyna is dead. A Ukrainian journalist was abducted by Russians
Wiktoria Roszczyna was an independent author cooperating with, among others, the newspaper “Ukrainska Pravda”. The journalist disappeared on August 3, 2023 in the Russian-occupied eastern areas of Ukraine, where she was preparing a report.
For many months, the authorities in Kiev maintained that the woman had been kidnapped by Russians, but Moscow did not confirm this information.
Finally, in May 2024, the Kremlin admitted that Roszczyna had been detained by their services.
Ukraine-Russia. Wiktoria Roszczyna was supposed to return to the country
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced that the author was to be included in one of the upcoming prisoner exchanges. For this purpose, she was to be transported to Moscow’s Lefortovo prison to await her return to the country. However, this did not come to fruition.
Andriy Yusov said that the Russian side has still not officially confirmed either the reporter’s death or the cause of death.
