More than 10,000 civilians have been killed since the outbreak of war in Ukraine. The number of injured is over 18,500. The United Nations (UN) monitoring mission in Ukraine announced this on Tuesday.
Danielle Bell, the head of the UN monitoring mission, called it a “grim milestone” for Ukraine.
Ukraine has been at war with Russia since the end of February 2022. In August to October, 86 percent of the victims occurred in areas under the control of the Ukrainian government. Nearly half of these victims were away from the front lines. Therefore, Bell concludes that “no place in Ukraine is completely safe.”
Among the 10,000 fatalities, more than 560 are children. This only concerns deaths confirmed by the UN mission. The actual death toll may be much higher, according to the UN, because it is difficult to verify information. In addition, this is a time-consuming job.
