Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine, Vienna has already sent 70 trucks with relief supplies to Ukraine – most recently, a transport was approved today at the Favoriten clinic in the presence of Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and the Ukrainian ambassador Vasyl Khymynets. The vehicle was loaded with 40 hospital beds and 71 mattresses. The goods are being taken to a hospital in the southern Ukrainian city of Podilsk.

There they are supposed to create urgently needed capacity for the wounded, it was said. Since the attack on Ukraine in February 2022, Vienna has already delivered 425 tons of aid to affected areas, it was emphasized. Ludwig emphasized in a statement that the first aid transport left the city on the day of the attack. Since then, mainly medical equipment and rescue vehicles have been delivered. Vienna also helped to equip the children’s clinic in Mariupol, which was destroyed by Russian troops in 2022.

“We have experience and personal contacts to ensure that our help reaches where it is really needed,” explained Ludwig. He particularly emphasized the good cooperation with the Ukrainian authorities and the Austrian Embassy in Kiev, which ensured that the relief supplies were distributed to the right hospitals and facilities. “It is important to us to support where we can,” emphasized the General Director of the Vienna Health Association, Evelyn Kölldorfer-Leitgeb. “This year we are already counting around 700 hospital beds that have found their way to Ukraine,” she explained.

In addition to the delivery of medical supplies, Vienna also provides vehicles for the Ukrainian civil defense. For example, fire engines were sent to Lviv and rescue vehicles to Odessa. A special contingent of firefighting equipment – including inflatable boats and pumps – was brought to Ukraine to deal with the flood disaster following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam.

The city is not only committed to donations in kind, but also financially, the mayor reported. In 2022 it provided 429,000 euros for emergency aid, and in April 2024 a further 50,000 euros were added to alleviate the humanitarian crisis. Orphans were also invited to recreational stays.

Ludwig also pointed out that more than 32,700 Ukrainians live in Vienna. “We have to keep reminding ourselves that the Ukrainian border is closer than the one with Switzerland. It is our duty to continue to provide humanitarian aid,” said the city boss. He emphasized that the city is making all necessary efforts to continue to help people in and from Ukraine – both through donations in kind and through financial support. (apa)
