Ukraine urges EU to block Hungary’s energy cooperation with Russia amid war tensions

Oleg Ustenko, economic adviser to the President of Ukraine, said that a series of agreements that enhance Hungary’s energy cooperation with Russia would only prolong a full-scale war and urged the European Union to block them.

According to Zelensky’s adviser, Hungary, through its agreements with Russia, sponsors its war in Ukraine, including war crimes.

Ustenko urged the European Union to “put every possible pressure” on Budapest to prevent Russia from receiving more cash in exchange for energy for Hungary.

“Hungary receives financial support from Brussels, so this is a great tool that can be used immediately. They (the Hungarians – ed.) are doing it at the expense of everyone. They are trying to get these comparative advantages because they continue to cooperate with the Kremlin regime,” he said. adviser to the President of Ukraine.

As you know, the day before, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó visited Moscow, where he achieved an agreement to increase supplies gas from Russia and updated the agreement on financing the Paks nuclear power plant.

Szijjarto’s trip to the capital of Russia distinguishes the position of Budapest among other countries of the European Union. Most members of the 27-nation group have distanced themselves from Russian President Vladimir Putin over his invasion of Ukraine and seek to wean their countries off Russian fossil fuels.

The Hungarian government has actively lobbied the EU to lift any sanctions imposed on Russian gas, oil and nuclear fuel, and threatened to veto proposed EU action against Moscow.

Szijjarto is one of the few officials from an EU country who has met with Russian officials in Moscow since the all-out war in Ukraine began.
