Ukraine controls 82 communities and 1,150 square kilometers in the Russian border region of Kursk, Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Shirsky said today, on the ninth day of an unprecedentedly large-scale Ukrainian offensive on Russian soil.

“In total, since the start of operations in the Kursk region, our troops have advanced to a depth of 35 kilometers,” the officer said during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We have taken control of 1,150 square kilometers of land and 82 communities,” he added, describing the situation as “under control.”

In addition, Oleksandr Shirki said that Ukraine installed a military command in the Russian region of Kursk.

An indication of the intention of the Ukrainian forces to settle in for the long term, this military structure is charged with current affairs and with the logistical support of the army, as well as with guaranteeing security in a given zone.

Russia is sending more troops

Russia announced today that it will send additional forces to the Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said today, on the ninth day of an unprecedentedly large-scale Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory.

During a meeting dedicated to the security of the border regions, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belusov spoke of the “allocation of additional forces and means” in the Belgorod region, which borders Kursk, where Ukrainian troops have invaded since the 6 August.

“The meeting (…) allowed us to discuss additional measures aimed at guaranteeing the integrity and inviolability of the territory, as well as the protection of the population and infrastructure in the Belgorod region against the attacks of the military forces” of the Ukrainian army, said the Russian minister on Telegram.

Today, for the first time since the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region on August 6, the Russian army claimed to have recaptured the village of Krupets.
