Ukraine will start talks with the United States this week about issuing security guarantees to Kyiv pending the completion of the NATO accession process. President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff said this on Sunday.
Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak also said on the Telegram messaging app that officials from a number of countries are preparing to meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss Zelensky’s peace plan. This plan assumes the withdrawal of all Russian troops. It also provides for the restoration of Ukraine’s pre-war borders and the return of all prisoners and deported children. The Ukraine summit will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on August 5-6, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Yermak said the plan would be discussed in three phases ahead of a meeting of heads of state and government. The talks with the US on security guarantees follow up on commitments made by the Group of 7 (G7) earlier this month at the NATO summit in Lithuania to develop and provide security guarantees.
“We will start talks with the United States this week,” Yermak told Telegram. “Security guarantees for Ukraine will be concrete long-term commitments that will ensure Ukraine’s ability to defeat and curb Russian aggression in the future.”
Ukraine and Russia held a series of peace talks shortly after the Russian invasion in February 2022, but they failed to reach an agreement. Ukraine now says it will not participate in further talks with the Russians until all Russian troops have left. (AP)
