Ukraine can use the F-16 fighters it has received from the Netherlands on the territory of Russia. “We did not impose any restrictions on the use and flight range of the F-16s as long as the law of war is respected,” Dutch Armed Forces Commander Ono Eichelsheim said in an interview with the NOS radio network today.
According to Eichelsheim’s statements, the same applies to other weapons systems delivered by the Netherlands to Ukraine: the Ukrainian armed forces can use them on the battlefield “as they see fit”, as long as they adhere to the principles of international humanitarian law. “We want Ukraine to win the war and we are making every effort to make that happen,” said the Dutch military commander.
In total, the Netherlands promised to deliver 24 F-16 fighters to Ukraine. Eichelheim did not say how many aircraft have already been given to Ukraine.
One F-16 was destroyed
One of the first six F-16 fighter jets that Ukraine recently received from its Western partners crashed on Monday, August 26, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing a US Defense Department official.
According to the official, the crash does not appear to have been caused by Russian fire. It remains to be determined what caused the incident, pilot error or mechanical failure.
The Ukrainian Air Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.
President Zelensky announced on August 5 that Ukraine had begun using F-16s for domestic operations, confirming the long-awaited arrival of US-made F-16 fighters, nearly two and a half years after the Russian invasion began.
Tough battles
Ukraine’s army chief Oleksandr Shirsky said today that he spent several days on the eastern front of Pokrovsk, where Russian pressure has recently intensified.
Sirsky says in his Facebook post that Russia is throwing everything at these attacks, trying to break Ukrainian defenses.
“The fighting is extremely tough,” he says, adding that Ukraine must constantly use unorthodox methods to strengthen its positions.
They want anti-aircraft
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba today called on EU allies to speed up deliveries of air defense systems.
“I conveyed a sense of urgency regarding the delivery of already promised military aid, including air defense systems,” the Ukrainian minister told X after meeting EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
The news site RBK-Ukraina writes that Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, before the meeting of EU foreign ministers, said that Kiev has not yet received all the Patriot systems promised to be delivered by the allies and that among the statements on the their delivery and delivery there is “dimension”.
Germany, the USA, Romania and the Netherlands had announced the delivery of Patriot batteries to Ukraine. According to open sources it has become known that only Germany delivered Patriot arrays in early July.
