Central Zaporizhzhia under Russian supervision
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest in southern Ukraine, will operate under Russian supervision after Moscow annexed the surrounding territories via what Kiev and the international community have branded a “farce referendum”. This was stated by the Russian Foreign Ministry quoted by the Ria Novosti news agency. The announcement comes as the director general of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) Rafael Mariano Grossi has evaluated the possibility of conducting a new visit to the Zaporizhzhia plant. Grossi will also be in Kiev in the next few days and then in Moscow to discuss the creation of a safety zone around the plant.
Yesterday the IAEA explained that the director of the nuclear plant in Zaporizhzhia Ihor Murashov, arrested and then released by the Russian authorities, will not continue in office. “It is not clear who will be the new manager of the Zaporizhzhia plant,” added the IAEA on its Twitter account.
