The town of Avdiyivka in eastern Ukraine, which has been besieged for months by Russian troops, is at risk of falling into the hands of the invaders, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said today.
“Unfortunately, we are receiving reports from the Ukrainians that the situation is critical as the Russians are squeezing Ukrainian positions with each passing day. Avdiivka is at risk of falling under Russian control. To a large extent, this is because the Ukrainian forces in the area are running out of artillery fire,” Kerby said.
Earlier today, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned that the deadlock in the US Congress over the release of new aid to Kiev is already having an impact on the battlefield in Ukraine.
#NATO Defence Ministers met to prepare our #NATOSummit in Washington. We continue to strengthen deterrence & defence, and we must all continue to support #Ukraine. This is underpinned by historic progress on defence investment, with 18 Allies due to spend 2% of GDP this year. pic.twitter.com/UVYQARcPgd
