This year, Ukraine received 30 units of the Polish tank PT-91 Twardy. Thus, the total amount of this machine is probably over 50. The PT-91 Twardy is a Polish tank developed in the 1990s by the Polish defense company OBRUM. It is a modernized version of the Soviet T-72 tank used by the Polish Army during the Cold War.
The PT-91 Twardy features improved armor, more powerful engine and an upgraded fire control system compared to the original T-72 tank. It is armed with a 125 mm smoothbore gun that can fire a variety of munitions, including high-explosive, armor-piercing and guided missiles.
The jet armor and advanced fire control systems make it closer to the T-90 than the classic T-72.
Modern composite armor provides better protection against anti-tank weapons than the T-72M. Thermal imaging sight and laser range finderwhich provides better accuracy and targeting capabilities compared to the T-72M.
The PT-91 Twardy is powered by a 12-cylinder diesel engine that produces 1,120 hp, while the T-72 is powered by a V-12 diesel engine that has nearly 100 hp. less.
Its light weight of 45 tonssmaller crew and great similarity to Soviet tanks make it very practical for Kiev.
Its good qualities for work in difficult terrain find customers of PT-91 Twardy also abroad. Malaysia buys 48 units from the Polish machine.
Its ability to handle mud and clay soils more easily could make the PT-91 Twardy the leading armored vehicle for Ukraine’s upcoming counteroffensive.
