Ukraine struck targets in the Russian city of St. Petersburg last night using a locally made drone that flew 1,250 kmsaid the Ukrainian Minister for Strategic Sectors of Industry Oleksandr Kamyshyn, quoted by Interfax Ukraine and BTA.
A Ukrainian military source earlier told Reuters that an oil terminal in Russia’s second-largest city, located about 850 km from the nearest stretch of the Ukrainian border, had been targeted as part of “a new stage of work in this region”.
“Last night we hit the target and this thing flew exactly 1,250 km last night,” Kamishin was quoted by the agency as saying in Davos.
Reuters said it was unable to independently confirm this information.
A Russian-appointed representative in occupied southeastern Ukraine said earlier today that Ukraine attempted to strike a Russian oil terminal on the Baltic Sea with drones overnight.
Nearly two years since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the attack shows how Kiev is trying to retaliate, including by striking targets deep inside Russia.
Kiev is trying to develop and produce longer-range drones to close the gap in its strike capabilities against Russia, which regularly carries out long-range missile and drone airstrikes against Ukraine.
Ukraine’s armed forces use drones and missiles to strike targets in the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
