Kiev –
President of Russia Vladimir Putin yesterday announced a brief ceasefire from Friday (6/1). However, it turned out to be the eastern region Ukraine still bombed by the military Russia.
Russian troops attacked the city of Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine on Friday (6/1) on Saturday (7/1/2023), according to AFP. The attack came after the start of a unilateral ceasefire imposed by Russia on Putin’s orders.
“The invaders hit the city with rockets twice,” Kyrylo Tymoshenko said on social media, adding that a residential building was hit but there were no casualties.
Not only that, the artillery exchange also hit war-torn cities in eastern Ukraine. Indeed, the brief truce announced by Putin earlier this week was supposed to start at 0900 local time and would have been the first full break since the invasion of Moscow in February 2022.
However, AFP reporters heard shelling in and out of the frontline town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine after a Russian ceasefire was due to begin. The frontline town of Kurakhove was also targeted by the Russians.
Kyrylo Tymoshenko of the Ukrainian president’s office also said Russian troops attacked a fire station in the southern city of Kherson. The attack left several people dead or injured.
“They’re talking about a truce. Who are we at war with,” he said.
The head of Ukraine’s Luhansk region added that Russian forces fired 14 shots at positions in Kiev and are trying to storm settlements held by Ukrainian troops.
Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry said it still complied with its unilateral ceasefire. The Russians accused Ukrainian troops of continuing to fire.
The two countries celebrated Orthodox Christmas and the Russian leader’s order came following calls for a ceasefire by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian spiritual leader, Patriarch Kirill, a staunch supporter of Putin.
