Ukrainian star Roman Yaremchuk broke down in tears after Wales ended his country’s dreams at the World Cup in Cardiff.

An own goal by former West Ham star Andriy Yarmolenko made the difference as Rob Page’s side secured a narrow 1-0 win to book their place in Qatar in November. Ukraine had plenty of good chances but failed to capitalize on their first-half dominance on a frustrating night in the Welsh capital.

An incredible 2,000 Ukrainian fans packed the away ground at Cardiff City Stadium to watch their team in action, all standing to applaud their team’s efforts at the final whistle.

Ukraine’s stars came to the corner of the stadium to reciprocate their support, but it all proved too much for Benfica’s star Yaremchuk, who collapsed in the emotion of it all.

The 26-year-old couldn’t hold back his tears as he joined his teammates in applauding traveling fans, emotion clearly felt due to recent events in the war-torn country.

Yaremchuk blurted it out as he walked over to applaud the 2,000 traveling fans

Manchester City ace Oleksandr Zinchenko said before the match that it was a “dream” to reach the World Cup. After the game, he said that he felt sorry for the fans who supported them on their incredible journey.

“I also feel sorry for them and for the fans around the world who supported us. You can’t blame the players, every single one of them gave their all on the pitch,” he told Sky Sports. “But that’s football, it can happen.

“Everyone needs to live in peace,” he added, turning his attention to the war in his homeland. “We need to stop the war completely, you never know what is going to happen. Today it is Ukraine, but tomorrow Russian aggression may be with your country.”

Unfortunately, it didn’t go to Ukraine in Cardiff, as Wales booked their place in the World Cup proper for the first time since 1958.
