Will mark distance from the Russian Orthodox Church.
To mark distance from the Russian Orthodox Church, the Christmas celebration in Ukraine has been moved from 7 January to 25 December.
The amendment was signed by president Volodymyr Zelenskyj Friday.
In Russia and several other countries with Orthodox churches, Christmas is celebrated on January 7. This has also been the practice in Ukraine until now.
In recent years, however, Orthodox Church leaders in Ukraine have cut ties with the Russian Church. The move of the Christmas celebration is a new expression of the desire to distance himself from the church leadership in Moscow, which supports the war against Ukraine.
The purpose of the law change is to abandon the Russian tradition of celebrating Christmas in January, according to a document on the website of the National Assembly of Ukraine.
