“Ukraine sees China as potential mediator in conflict with Russia”

The phone conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Chinese leader Xi Jinping “is a big step forward in strengthening our relations with China and ending Russian aggression”

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Melnyk believes that the probability of China taking the role of mediator in the war in Ukraine “is not unrealistic”, DPA reported.

“Of course the Chinese are pursuing their own interests, but I really think that a just and peaceful resolution and cessation of hostilities is more in line with Beijing’s interests than this huge and unstoppable earthquake shaking the entire world order,” he said today Melnik in an interview for the editions of the German media group “Funke”.

The phone conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Chinese leader Xi Jinping “is a big step forward in strengthening our relations with China and ending Russian aggression,” he added.

Melnyk, who is a former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, said, however, that “for Kiev, the withdrawal of all Russian troops from the occupied territories is a mandatory condition.”

According to China’s proposal for a political solution to the conflict in Ukraine, Russia’s withdrawal from the regions it annexed last year, or from the Crimean Peninsula, is not envisaged, the agency notes.
