According to Ukraine, talks are taking place with the US government to secure wartime aid. The House of Representatives on Saturday approved emergency funding to prevent a government shutdown.
This arrangement lasts 45 days and includes freezing aid to Ukraine. “The Ukrainian government is now actively working with US partners to ensure that the new US budget decision includes new funds to assist Ukraine,” a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.
It is not yet clear how President Joe Biden’s administration might make those funds available. Biden previously used his executive powers to release relief funds.
On Sunday, Biden said the emergency funding does not mean America will abandon Ukraine. “I want to assure our allies, the American people and the people of Ukraine that you can count on our support. We will not walk away,” he said in a speech. A new financing proposal for Ukraine should be on the table in the coming “days and weeks”.
The United States has provided Ukraine with more than 40 billion dollars (more than 37 billion euros) in military aid since the Russian invasion in February 2022.
But the financing of aid for Ukraine is increasingly under discussion in Washington. The Republican side in particular would prefer to see the money spent in other ways, including on limiting illegal immigration.
