The EU’s foreign affairs chief, Josep Burrell, warns of the ever-increasing lack of ammunition for Ukrainian forces.
– We are in a pressing war situation. The shortage of ammunition must be resolved quickly. It is a matter of weeks, says Borrell and emphasizes that the war may be over if something is not done.
On Monday, the EU’s foreign ministers will meet, where Borrell will also participate. At the meeting, the EU’s foreign affairs chief will propose using the entire European Peace Fund on ammunition for Ukraine, writes The Guardian.
Borrell supports Estonia’s proposal for a procurement model, which is for countries in Europe to come together in the same way as they did to buy sufficient doses of vaccine during the pandemic, but this time to buy ammunition.

The fund is NOK 39 billion and was established in 2021 to finance purposes that prevent conflict, strengthen international security and contribute to peace.
– We have to do much more, much faster. There is still much to be done. We must increase and speed up our military support. It currently takes ten months from the time Defense in Europe buys bullets for 155mm guns, until they arrive. So almost a year. For air-to-air missiles, the delivery time is almost three years, says Burrell and concludes:
– It does not fit the war situation we are now living with.
– We have forgotten how classic wars are fought
Estonia’s Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, also advocated on Sunday that the production of ammunition in Europe is going too slowly. Furthermore, the prime minister said that Russian industry is in war mode, and that they are producing ammunition at high speed, around the clock. Kallas calls for a similar change of pace in Europe.
– We have forgotten how classic wars are fought and have rather been focused on very specific efforts, said the Estonian Prime Minister.

Burrell agrees with the message Kallas brought, adding that too much time has been spent making decisions about donating tanks.
– Everyone knows that to win a classic war, you need tanks. You won’t win a war without that kind of weapon.
