Ukraine.- Russia rejects Biden’s words on Crimea and stresses that “there was no annexation”

MADRID, 1 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Russian Presidency on Monday rejected the words of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, on the situation in Crimea and stressed that “there was no annexation” of the peninsula, but a “reunification” with the Eurasian country.

Biden said on Friday that he will “never” recognize Russian sovereignty over the Crimean peninsula, on the seventh anniversary of the start of an annexation that, in Washington’s view, stems from an “illegal invasion.”

“Indeed, it is impossible to recognize the annexation of Crimea. Nobody talks about the annexation of Crimea because there was none. There was a reunification of Crimea with Russia, and in strict accordance with all the norms of International Law,” the Kremlin spokesman stressed. , Dimitri Peskov.

Thus, he stressed that this “reunification” was the result of the decision of the Crimean authorities, “in accordance with the status of Crimea, then within Ukraine,” in reference to the referendum held in March 2014 on the peninsula.

“There was no annexation and we must not recognize it. We must recognize the reunification of Crimea with Russia,” has settled Peskov, as reported by the Russian news agency Sputnik.

Russia annexed Crimea in March 2014 after deploying military personnel to the Ukrainian peninsula and after organizing a secession referendum rejected by the international community. Russia’s annexation of Crimea was rejected by the United States, the European Union and the United Nations as illegal.
