Ukraine Reveals Claims About Number of Arrested Russian Troops

KYIV, KOMPAS.com – Ukraine make claims about the number of captured soldiers.

Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Vereshchuk on Saturday (19/2/2022), said Ukraine had arrested hundreds of soldiers Russia since the beginning of the military conflict with Russia.

“Currently, we officially have 562 POWs of the Russian Federation,” he said in an interview with the TSN television channel. Russia Today (RT) accessed via the Android app RT News.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not confirmed the information.

Meanwhile, Vereshchuk provided no evidence to support his statement about the arrests Russian army.

“All Russians arrested have been registered on a special list,” Vereshchuk said.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Attorney General Irina Venediktova told British state broadcaster BBC that camps for Russian prisoners of war had been set up in her country.

He claimed that all troops were treated in accordance with the Geneva Conventions and that medical care was available in the camps.

However, many Russian prisoners of war are reported to have been filmed in “confessions” videos since the beginning of the conflict.

As for the Ukrainian captives, Vereshchuk emphasized that Ukraine has not managed to distinguish newer ones from those detained since 2014, when the conflict in the Donbass region broke out.

“There are several hundred of them,” said the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine.

“But if we roughly separate them, we have approximately 270 prisoners. The ones recorded are the ones on the register. The total [sejak 2014] there are about 650,” he said.
