Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ukrainian side said on Saturday (4/6/2022) that it had retaken the battlefield in Sievierodonetsk. Where in recent times the city of Sievierodonetsk became the scene of a very fierce battle taking place.
Indeed, Ukraine’s claims cannot be independently verified, and Moscow says its own forces are making gains there. But it was the first time Kyiv had claimed to have launched a massive counterattack on Sievierodonetsk after days of surrendering there.
Quoted by Reuters, Serhiy Gaidai, governor of Ukraine’s Luhansk province, which includes Sievierodonetsk, said last night that Ukrainian forces who previously controlled only 30% of the city had counterattacked, to retake an additional 20% control of the city from Russia.
Russia has concentrated its forces in Sievierodonetsk in recent weeks for one of the biggest ground battles of the war, with Moscow appearing to be risking its campaign to seize one of the two eastern provinces it claims in the name of a separatist proxy.
“The situation remains very difficult in Sievierodonetsk, where street fighting is ongoing,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in a speech late Saturday.
Both sides claim to have inflicted heavy casualties in the battle for the small industrial city, a battle that military experts say could determine which side has momentum for a protracted war of attrition in the coming months.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov on Saturday said that while it is impossible to predict when the war will end, “my optimistic prognosis is realistic to achieve this by the beginning of this year,” the defense ministry said.
