Ukraine has rejected claims that Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group have seized the entire Soledar region. Photo/REUTERS
The region’s fall into the hands of Muscovite troops, if it occurs, will pave the way for the occupation of other areas of Donbass.
“Soledar is, is and will be, [milik] the people of Ukraine,” said a statement of the strategic communications unit of the Ukrainian military, on Wednesday (11/1/2023), as quoted AFP extension.
The unit said the images released by the Wagner group, which Russian media said were taken in Soledar, were taken elsewhere.

Earlier, the Wagner group announced that its units had taken control of the entire Soledar area. They claim fighting is still going on with some Ukrainian troops already surrounded.
On Tuesday evening, the director of the Wagner group Yevgeny Prigozhin announced the victory of his troops. Prigozhin is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“There is a cauldron in the center of the city, where the urban fighting took place,” Prigozhin said in a statement released to the media, as quoted Russia Today.
“Tomorrow we will announce the number of prisoners,” Prigozhin continued.
He added that only Wagner and no other units had taken part in the raid on Soledar.
