Concerned about Russia’s possible attack, Ukraine has initiated trilateral talks with US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the head of the Ukrainian president’s office, Volodymyr Zelensky, said on Friday.
“President Zelensky suggested that President Biden (…) hold a tripartite meeting, possibly in a video conference between President Biden, President Zelenski and President Putin,” Zelensky’s chief of staff Andrew Jermak told the Atlantic Council in Washington.
“We are still waiting for a reaction from Russia, I think. But our American partners received our proposal with some interest, ”said Jermaks.
Zelensky also called for a new summit with France, Germany and Russia on Tuesday to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Biden and Putin have twice discussed the tensions around Ukraine over the phone, and the US president has warned Moscow that it will face huge economic consequences if it intends to attack Ukraine.
Jermac praised the Baiden administration for keeping Ukraine informed of ongoing talks with Russia, but said that Ukraine itself should be involved in the process.
If the security system in Europe is being discussed, it is necessary to involve Ukraine, Jermaks stressed.
