Ukraine orders the last soldiers at the Azovstal steelworks to stop the defense of Mariupol
The last Ukrainian forces left at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol have been told by the Ukrainian army to give up the defense of Mariupol to save their own lives.
according to Sky News and the news agency AFP, the Ukrainian Azov regiment has been ordered to stop the defense of the city to “save the lives of soldiers” in Mariupol.
– We have been ordered to save the lives of the soldiers in our garrison and to stop defending the city, says Denys Prokopenko, who leads the Azov regiment, in a video published on Telegram.
The soldiers at Azovstal are believed to be the last remaining Ukrainian forces in Mariupol still fighting the invading forces.
According to British intelligence, around 1,700 Ukrainian soldiers have already surrendered at the Mariupol steelworks, and an unknown number remain there.
