Ukraine: oligarchs targeted, special tribunal for war crimes… Europe keeps up the pressure on Russia

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, once again assured on Wednesday 30 November the EU’s support for Ukraine.

Don’t let yourself go. The European Union (EU) wants the creation of a special tribunal, supported by the United Nations, to investigate and try possible war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine, the president of the European Commission announced on Wednesday.

“We are ready to start working with the international community to gain the widest possible international support for this specialized court,” Ursula von der Leyen said, adding that she would continue to support the International Criminal Court.
The EU executive also proposed a plan to confiscate frozen Russian assets in response to the invasion of Ukraine in February.

Frozen 19 billion euros

“We froze 300 billion euros of reserves of the Russian Central Bank and we froze 19 billion euros to the Russian oligarchs”, specified the president of the Commission in a communiqué.

In the short term, Brussels and its partners could manage these funds and invest them. The proceeds would go to Ukraine, which could partially cover the damage suffered since the start of the war.

“We will work on an international agreement with our partners to make this possible. And together we can find legal ways to achieve this,” added Ursula von der Leyen.
