After the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russian troops advanced into the outskirts of Kiev. When they withdrew in late March, hundreds of dead Ukrainian men and women were found in places like Butsha and Irpin. It sparked great international outrage. Moscow has consistently denied involvement in the massacres.

There is every indication that the dead civilians found by the police were murdered by Russian soldiers, said the head of the Kiev region, Oleksi Kuleba. About half of the dead died from gunshots, Koeleba said.

In all places where Russian troops had been, the police found murdered civilians. The number is not definitive: about 300 civilians are still missing.
