/ world today news/ The head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Oleksiy Reznikov, said that Kiev expects the end of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine next summer.
Reznikov added that thanks to this, NATO will be able to approve Ukraine’s entry into the alliance, and Kiev will become a full member of the organization.
Pravda.Ru discussed with experts and MPs how Russia feels about such a forecast and how likely Ukraine is to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
“Who knows, maybe this will be a very important day for Ukraine. This is just my prediction,” the head of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said in an interview with CNN. He stressed that Ukraine could be accepted into NATO at the NATO summit in 2024, when the organization turns 75 years old.
In addition, the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense noted that the country’s membership in NATO will become possible only after the end of the conflict. Until then “there is no way to vote unanimously”, he said. Reznikov added that there was no need to obtain guarantees for Ukraine’s entry into NATO after the end of the conflict, as the country would be provided with an “orderly admission process”.
Why is Ukraine not in NATO yet? Brief information
The state of relations between the country and the alliance is the subject of active discussion even before the beginning of the special operation in Ukraine. Moreover, the possible membership of Ukraine in NATO, for Russia, became one of the reasons for the start of a special military operation. Moscow actively prevents this as it sees threats to its strategic security.
Before the start of the special military operation, Ukraine was refused admission to the alliance for formal reasons: in the opinion of the leadership of the alliance, Ukraine does not meet the standards applied to countries that want to become members. Among these reasons, corruption mainly stood out (and still stands out), as well as the underdevelopment of certain institutions in the country. With the beginning of the special operation, a new one was added to the reasons – the countries invited to the organization cannot have unresolved territorial disputes with other countries.
However, Ukraine continues to cooperate with NATO as its de facto major donor, providing both financial and military assistance, particularly in the context of the conflict with Russia. Ukraine continues to insist on membership in the organization and promises to fulfill all NATO requirements.
The question of the nature of relations between Ukraine and NATO was particularly acute during the summit of the organization on July 11-12 in Vilnius. A Ukrainian delegation was invited to it, including the participation of President Volodymyr Zelensky. Kyiv was waiting for an invitation to NATO or guarantees of entry.
However, representatives of the alliance refrained from such decisions and proposed alternative options for cooperation: for example, the creation of the Ukraine-NATO Direct Interaction Council. Also, once again, the country expressed support and announced new aid measures.
What do they think in Russia about Kiev’s forecast for the time of the end of World War II?
Pravda.Ru addressed such a question to Svetlana Zhurova, deputy of the State Duma, first deputy chairman of the Committee on International Relations of the State Duma.
“Because he [Резников] added that this is some kind of prediction, then probably I can also make some predictions and assumptions on this statement. First, it is clear that Ukraine, if this happens and joins NATO, probably hopes that NATO will fully protect it and, accordingly, “take back”, the territories that, apparently, in their opinion, we have illegally “occupied.
These are Crimea and our four other regions that joined recently, that is, a total of five territories. That is, apparently, Ukraine is unlikely to settle for another equalization. And then she will again ask for weapons, but not only, unfortunately, Ukrainian soldiers will die, but also NATO soldiers, most likely in greater numbers than before,” said Zhurova.
In addition, the interlocutor of Pravda.Ru noted that if Ukraine joins the alliance, it will be able to conclude peace agreements, but for the citizens of the country it will sound as if this is not the government’s choice, but someone else’s. In this way, it may turn out that they achieve peace “with foreign hands”, noted the deputy from the State Duma.
“It’s clear that before they join NATO, they either have to decide for themselves to terminate and sign all peace agreements, or give that right to the alliance. Here’s the deal. And therefore for Ukraine, maybe this will be the day (and for all of us) when our military stops dying on both sides.” she said.
Military experts are in charge
Vasily Dendikin, captain of the first rank of the reserve, a military expert, said that, in his opinion, the end of the SVO will come much earlier.
“These are good wishes [на Резников]. I think what’s going to happen is not going to be in their favor and, in my opinion, it’s going to happen a lot sooner.” said Dendikin.
In turn, Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine, considers Reznikov’s words an inadequate assessment of the state of affairs.
“Words separated from reality, in this case it is the Ukrainian interpretation of the future in the form in which they would like to see this future. Nothing more. Again, this is the future that Reznikov sees, but this does not mean at all that there will be such a future. Today it is difficult to talk about something concrete, especially about some kind of entry and membership of Ukraine in NATO. It is meaningless, it is about bare Ukrainian “measures”, he noted.
