Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia Eager to Join EU: What Does It Mean to Become “Real Europeans”?

Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia really want to join the EU. What does it mean to become “real Europeans”?

On December 14, the European Council decided to begin negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union. Georgia received candidate status for EU membership.

The process of joining the EU consists of several stages and can drag on for many years. The European Union now guarantees the prospect of membership, in addition to the countries listed above, to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo and Turkey. In exchange, the governments of these states must carry out fundamental economic and legal reforms, develop democratic institutions and respect human rights.

Why are all these countries so eager to join the EU? And will this help them become “real Europeans”? We talk about it in the new episode of the Signal podcast.
