Ukraine: Mines, ammunition and explosives are floating in the Black Sea, and fish are dying

Flooding has receded since the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam, but debris along the Dnieper River is turning Odessa’s Black Sea coast into a “dump and graveyard for animals,” Ukrainian authorities say.

“Many mines, ammunition and other explosive items are being washed out to sea and washed ashore. The Dnieper River flows into the Black Sea,” Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said on its website.

They added that border officials were monitoring a “sea of fish” in the district.

The bursting of the dam’s walls took place on June 6 and is one of the biggest industrial and environmental disasters in Europe in decades. The disaster destroyed entire villages, flooded farmland, deprived tens of thousands of people of electricity and clean water, and caused enormous environmental damage.

“The consequences of ecocide are terrible,” the ministry added.

Swimming and fishing are prohibited in the region and people are advised to drink only bottled or imported water.

Ukraine reports that the concentration of harmful substances in the water samples is ten times higher than the permissible norm.
