More tentara Ukraine killed when two military helicopters crashed on a combat mission in the east of the country. That’s what the investigators said Ukraine on Thursday (31/8) local time.
The accident occurred in the Kramatorsk district in the Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine on Tuesday (29/8) local time. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) did not provide details on what happened.
“Two Mi-8 military helicopters crashed on a combat mission. Six servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were killed,” SBI said in a statement, as quoted by the news agency. AFPFriday (1/9/2023).
SBI stated that the initial investigation by the Security Intelligence Agency would focus temporarily on possible safety breaches during or in preparation for the flight, which would be classed as criminal offences.
The probe will also look into possible enemy sabotage or destruction of the helicopter, SBI said.
SBI added that investigators would examine data from the flight recorder and check the technical condition of the helicopter.
The Mi-8 military helicopter is currently still used by Ukraine in combat missions against the invasion Russia, although the Soviet-designed aircraft were mainly used for transportation. Each Mi-8 helicopter has a crew of three.
Many of Ukraine’s Mi-8 helicopters are decades old. However, Ukraine has received donations of more modern attack helicopters from allies.
