Ukraine Marks Two Years Since Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion with Rallying Cry for Victory
Ukraine commemorated the two-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion with a rallying cry for victory, as President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed that his country would prevail. In an address in the capital city of Kyiv, Zelensky declared, “None of us will allow our Ukraine to end.” This sentiment was echoed by Western leaders who joined him in a show of solidarity.
The anniversary comes at a challenging time for Ukraine, as it faces setbacks in its efforts to expel Russia from its territory. However, Zelensky emphasized that the war could only end on Ukraine’s terms. He stated, “That’s why, to the words ‘end of the war,’ we always add ‘on our terms.’ That’s why the word ‘peace’ always goes with ‘fair.'” Determined to fight for their country, Ukrainians refuse to give up and believe that victory will eventually be theirs.
The commemoration event in Kyiv was attended by the leaders of Italy, Belgium, and Canada, as well as the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. Together, they laid wreaths at a memorial wall honoring those who lost their lives in the conflict. However, the absence of senior US representatives was notable, in contrast to last year when President Joe Biden attended the anniversary.
Von der Leyen praised the Ukrainian troops who defended the country during the early days of the invasion and exceeded expectations in withstanding Russia’s forces. She commended their efforts, stating, “You managed to stop Russia’s attack to the heart of Ukraine. You saved your country, you saved all of Europe.” Italy and Canada also used this occasion to announce bilateral security pacts with Kyiv, aiming to bolster Ukraine’s aspirations of joining the NATO military alliance.
In a display of support, marches were held across Europe, with participants demanding that Russian President Vladimir Putin put an end to the war. In Moscow, rare protests against the war were organized by wives of mobilized soldiers, resulting in the detention of at least four individuals. Such demonstrations are infrequent due to strict laws in Russia that punish dissent.
The anniversary of Russia’s invasion coincides with a challenging period for Ukraine. Just a week ago, Ukraine announced the withdrawal of troops from the embattled town of Avdiivka, marking a significant victory for Russia. The failure of Ukraine’s counter-offensive and difficulties in securing further aid from the US have also dealt significant blows. Despite some gains in the war, such as sinking Russian warships and reportedly downing spy planes, President Zelensky’s promised victory still seems distant.
