Colorado

China called looking determined to use his power against Taiwan, which is still considered part of its territory. But experience Russia from Ukraine judged to have influenced Beijing’s calculations of how, not whether to, attack Taiwan.

As reported AFPThursday (07/21/2022), the assessment was delivered by the Head of the United States (US) Central Intelligence Agency or CIAWilliam Burns, while speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, USA, on Wednesday (20/7) local time.

“The risk for that gets higher, we think, the further you get into the decade,” Burns said at the forum.

Burns said that China felt ‘uneasy’ when it saw the war that was triggered by Russia in Ukraine which had entered its five months. Burns called the invasion of Ukraine a “strategic failure” for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who hopes to overthrow the Kiev government within a week.

“Our feeling is that it may have less influence on the question of whether the Chinese leadership might choose in the next few years to use force to control Taiwan, but how and when they will do so,” Burns said.

Furthermore, Burn said that China is believed to have been closely watching the situation in Ukraine. “You don’t achieve quick and decisive wins with disappointing strength,” he said.

“I suspect the lesson learned by the Chinese leadership and military is that you have to amass tremendous power if you contemplate it in the future,” Burns said.
