Ukraine: Major drone attack in Moscow – What is Russia’s response? – 2024-08-22 04:24:23

Ukraine is escalating the war. A new major drone attack was launched by the Ukrainian armed forces against Moscow

The mayor of Moscow announced in the early hours of today that the Russian capital was the target of a Ukrainian drone strike, “one of the largest” he said had been launched “ever” against the heart of Russian power.

“Another two drones flying in the direction of Moscow were shot down,” Sergei Sabianin reported at 04:43 (local and Greek time), following a series of similar posts on the Telegram platform.

Moscow’s “multi-layered” air defense “allowed us to successfully repel all attacks. The anti-aircraft defense forces of the Ministry of Defense shot down 10″ drones, the elected official assured.

Always according to Mr. Sabianin, it was “one of the largest attempted attacks against Moscow with drones ever made.”
Russian news agencies report that a total of 45 unmanned aerial vehicles launched by the Ukrainian armed forces against Russian territory were shot down.

Three unmanned aerial assault vehicles heading towards Moscow were shot down in the air over Padolsk, in the suburbs of the Russian capital, Mayor Sabianin said earlier. “According to the first data, there is no damage or casualties at the location where the debris fell,” he assured.

Russian air defenses shot down drones overnight in several areas. In Bryansk region (southwest), which borders Ukraine, 18 were destroyed, according to regional governor Alexander Bogamas, also speaking via Telegram. “There are no victims, no damage,” he added.

Further south, in Belgorod, “several” drones were shot down, regional governor Vychislav Gladkov said.

For his part, Vasily Golubev, the governor of Rastov (southwest), reported that anti-aircraft defense arrays destroyed a “missile” launched by the armed forces of Ukraine at around 01:00, without any casualties reported in this attack either.

The city of Moscow and its suburbs, more than 500 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, have already been the target of Ukrainian drone attacks in the past, which are generally rare.

In the summer of 2023, such aerial vehicles were destroyed in a district with skyscrapers, while in May 2023, two drones suffered the same fate a short distance from the Kremlin.

Russia has also been faced with an attack by the Ukrainian armed forces in the Kursk region for two weeks, while their forces continue their advance on the eastern front of Ukraine. Moscow rules out any negotiations with Kiev “at this stage” of the war.
