The war in Ukraine is escalating, alongside global concern over its evolution, as Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of more strikes with the new Oresnik missile on the battlefield.
The Russian president indicated that Russia has a ready-to-use stockpile, a day after the launch of an experimental ballistic missile over the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.
In his nightly message, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the weapon’s test on its soil as an “international crime.”
At the same time, he called on the international community to respond “strongly and decisively”. At the same time, the US expects that thousands of North Korean troops massing in Russia will “soon” enter the fray.
Moscow has a stockpile of the new powerful Oresnik ballistic missiles, like the one it fired at the city of Dnipro. He will continue to use them on the war front, warned See. Putin.
As he said “there is no countermeasure to such a missile, no means of intercepting it, in the world today. And I will emphasize once again that we will continue to test this newer system. It is necessary to establish its mass production”.
“It can hit targets across the territory of Europe”
The mass use of this weapon could be compared to the use of nuclear weapons, explained the head of the Russian strategic missile forces.
He stressed that “depending on the targets and the range of this weapon, it can hit targets across the entire territory of Europe. A fact that differentiates it from other types of long-range precision weapons.”
On his part, Mr. Zelensky called the testing of the new weapon on Ukrainian soil an international crime.
He called on the international community to condemn it and on its Western allies to further strengthen Ukrainian air defenses, while saying Russia was making a mockery of its Chinese ally’s calls for restraint.
“Russia makes a mockery of the position of states like China, Third World states, certain leaders who ask for restraint each time, but in response receive new escalation from Moscow. For this reason, the world must give a serious answer so that Putin is really afraid to expand the war,” emphasized V. Zelensky.
Kiev expects a major Russian counteroffensive in Kursk, where it has seized territory since August. Washington has announced that the roughly 10,000 North Korean troops deployed in the region will soon be thrown into battle.
Concern is growing over the escalation of the war in Ukraine
“Based on their training, the way they have been integrated into the Russian formations, I expect to see their direct involvement in combat soon,” estimated the US Secretary of State, L. Austin.
As concern grows over the escalation of the war in Ukraine, his first meeting with President-elect D. Trump had the Secretary General of NATO M. Rutte in Florida, two days before an emergency meeting of the North Atlantic alliance with the participation of Kiev in Brussels, where the new situation will be discussed, as it is shaped after the launch of the Russian hypersonic missile in response to the Ukrainian strikes with American and British missiles in Russian territory.
Next Tuesday, an extraordinary meeting of NATO member states will be held in Brussels with the participation of Ukraine, to examine the new situation after the launch of a new type of Russian missile against a Ukrainian missile manufacturing plant in the city of Dnipro.
The meeting is being convened at the request of Kyiv and will be at the level of ambassadors. Foreshadowing the summit, NATO spokesman Farah Dahlal said yesterday that the deployment of Russia’s experimental Oreshnik medium-range missile, first tested in Dnipro, “will not change either the course of the conflict or the resolve of the members of the Alliance to support Ukraine”.
The Swedish Minister of Defense, Pal Jonsson, moved on the same wavelength. “The recent escalation and provocation by Russia is an attempt to intimidate us and this will fail,” the Swedish official told a press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umerov in Stockholm.
Support wisely
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz moved in a different direction, considering that the launch of the Russian missile constitutes a “terrible escalation” of the conflict, which, in his opinion, justifies Berlin’s choice not to follow Joe Biden in his decision to give the green light for strikes inside Russia.
“We do not want to provide Ukraine with cruise missiles capable of penetrating deep into Russian territory,” the German leader said, stressing that “prudence and clear support for Ukraine go hand in hand.” For its part, the German Foreign Ministry called Kiev’s decision to use anti-personnel mines, which the Americans decided to deliver to Ukraine, a “regrettable event”.
But Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, one of the most ardent supporters of Ukraine, sounded the alarm about the real, as he said, risk of global conflict.
“The war in our east is entering a decisive phase, we feel that the unknown is approaching. The conflict is taking on dramatic proportions. The last few hours have shown that the threat of a global conflict is real and serious,” Tusk said.
