Several thousand Ukrainians marched in Kiev to show unity amid fears of a Russian invasion. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky told people not to panic and said he was already fed up with grim predictions of war in the media, Reuters reported.
Ukrainians filled the streets of central Kiev and marched, chanting “Glory to Ukraine,” carrying Ukrainian flags and banners reading “Ukrainians will resist” and “Invaders must die.”
Zelensky, who visited police exercises in the southern Kherson region, said a Russian attack could happen at any time, but expressed dissatisfaction with recent media reports that a major military conflict was looming.
“The best friend of our enemies is panic in our country. And all this information only causes panic and cannot help us,” he said. “I could not agree or disagree with something that has not yet happened. There is no full-scale war in Ukraine so far.”
The United States and a number of Western governments have called on their citizens to leave Ukraine, and Washington said today that it has ordered most of its embassy staff to leave Kiev.
Last month, Zelenski expressed dissatisfaction with gloomy forecasts for war. They had a bad effect on the economy and the exchange rate of the national currency, Reuters notes.
