The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry believes that the United States’ determination to seek compensation for Ukraine in the event of the completion of the gas pipeline “has increased significantly.”
Ukraine is ready to negotiate compensation for the loss of cash proceeds from gas transit after the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said in an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt.
“If we are offered negotiations on compensation, we will consider it. But we will not necessarily agree to what we will be offered,” Kuleba said.
As the minister said, he has the impression that recently the United States’ determination to obtain compensation for Ukraine in the event of the completion of the gas pipeline “has significantly increased.”
According to him, for Ukraine, the gas pipeline is primarily a security threat.
“Therefore, we say that the gas pipeline should be used as a lever to induce Russia to play a constructive role in the peace process in eastern Ukraine,” the minister said.
