(Belga) The World Health Organization, the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Ukrainian authorities and NGOs assure that Ukrainians living with AIDS and HIV have sufficient antiretrovirals for the next 12 months. The WHO reported this on Wednesday.
“This war could undermine hard-earned progress on health issues, including HIV. We couldn’t let that happen now that Ukraine had taken a big step forward by giving more and more people access to antiretroviral medication, as well as diagnosis and treatment. treatment,” said Hans Kluge, the regional director for WHO Europe. WHO, together with PEPFA , the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the Public Health Center of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health and the NGOs Alliance for Public Health and 100% Life, has purchased 209,000 packs of the antiretroviral drug TLD. “This means that every person known to have HIV in Ukraine will be on the drug for 12 months,” the WHO said. The first shipment of medicines has already been brought to Ukraine via Poland, where they will be delivered to health centers all over the country. More antiretroviral drugs will be purchased in due course. There will also be a donation of the drug dolutegravir, for the treatment of children with HIV. An estimated 260,000 people in Ukraine have HIV. Before the war, 150,000 people received life-saving treatment with antiretroviral drugs, including 2,700 children. The medication prevents people with HIV from getting infections such as tuberculosis, one of the most common causes of death for people with HIV. (Belgium)
