In 2024 it is expected Ukraine to increase the areas, planted with soybeans and sugar beets, while corn acreage may decrease. This was announced by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, referring to the results of a survey on the plans and preparations of farmers for the spring planting campaign, writes apk-inform.
“Specifically, 70% of those surveyed said they plan to increase soybean acreage, which is a 21% increase over the previous year. In addition, farmers are interested in the production of spring canola, while some of them are planning to sow it for the first time. In general, the area with this crop will increase by 24%,” the report says.
The figures say there will be an 11% increase in pulses and 7% in spring barley. The growth in barley cultivation was due to the expanding range of sea transport. Spring wheat sowing will also increase by 2%.
“At the same time, the area sown with corn will decrease by 9%. Also, potentially sunflower seed areas could be reduced. But to date, the majority of farmers have not yet made a final decision regarding the area to plant this crop,” the ministry noted.
As for sugar beet, 60% of farmers who planted this crop last season will slightly expand the area, which may increase by 17% in Ukraine as a whole.
“In 2024, the planted areas of spring crops can decrease by 0.5 million ha or by 3.7% compared to the previous season”, the announcement summarizes.
