The Zelig team filming in Odessa.

Anyone who wants to understand the causes of the war between Russia and Ukraine should watch Katya Soldak’s documentary “The Long Breakup” at the film club today. Afterwards there will be a talk with the director and the Ukrainian ZeLIG student Kyrylo Naumko.

Katya Soldak tells in her 85-minute documentary “The Long Breakup” how this war came about. she comes from Kharkiv, one of the major Ukrainian cities that have meanwhile gained notoriety. Today she lives as a respected journalist in New York. She attended the Columbia School of Journalism, is the editor-in-chief of the respected business magazine “Forbes”.

„The Long Breakup“ (2020, 85 min) is a feature-length documentary about the long separation of Ukraine from the Soviet Union. The director also tells the story of her home country: the break away from the USSR, the two revolutions, the war with Russia – everything from the perspective of her family and friends in Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine, which is close to the Russian border. She explores the question of how geopolitical changes are changing people’s everyday lives and shows what happens when democracy wanes and the future of one’s own country becomes uncertain. Soldak has been filming over the past decade. The soundtrack comes from Ukrainian artists, among others.

Kyrylo Naumko is a student at the ZeLIG film school. Born in Odessa, he has been living in Bolzano since 2019. “Dear Odesa” was to be his diploma film. But then the war came and nothing is the same in Odessa, nor in the rest of Ukraine.

Date: March 31, at 8.30 p.m. in the Bolzano Film Club. Organizer: ZeLIG film school in cooperation with the film club. Free entry. Donations are collected.
