“They lied that they would not touch the civilian population, but from the first hours of the invasion, Russian troops beat civilian infrastructure. They deliberately chose tactics to shock people and everything that makes life just normal. Power stations, hospitals, kindergartens, homes, everything every day “the president said.”
“What the occupiers are doing to Kharkov, Ohtirka, Kiev, Odessa and other cities is being dragged to an international tribunal,” Zelensky said.
“Today, there is nothing in the country that the occupiers do not consider an acceptable goal. They are fighting against everyone,” Zelensky said in a web address.
Russian forces are “firing missiles at entire urban areas that do not and have never had any military infrastructure.”
“Vasilyev, Kiev, Chernivtsi, Sumy, Kharkiv and many other cities have living conditions that have not been experienced in our country since the Second World War.
“Ukraine has formally filed a lawsuit against Russia at the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague. We demand that Russia be prosecuted for distorting the concept of genocide to justify aggression,” Zelensky wrote on Twitter.
He called on the court to immediately order Russia to cease hostilities and begin proceedings next week.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that the aim of the invasion is to prevent genocide against Russian-speakers in Ukraine.
In the weeks leading up to the attack, Putin repeatedly claimed, without any evidence, that Ukraine wanted to exterminate Russian-speakers in eastern Ukraine. On Monday, he questioned Ukraine’s right to exist and called the Ukrainian government a Western-backed neo-Nazi regime.
Putin said the West was turning a blind eye to genocide, which affected four million people in Russia’s Donbass population.
