Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Corruption scandals continue to rock the Government of Ukraine. This happened when the country was in a state of war against Russia.
President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government this month sacked all regional military recruitment chiefs following a national audit. This ultimately led the head of state to ask parliament to increase penalties for those found to have committed corruption during wartime.
“I have set the task for the law and Ukrainian legislators will be offered my proposal to equate corruption with wartime high treason,” he was quoted as saying ReutersMonday (28/8/2023).
“I think parliament will get it next week and then the decision will be in parliament,” he added.
Zelensky, who says ending corruption is the key to defeating Russia, also hopes that by stamping out corruption he will make it easier for his partners to support a rebuilding effort that will cost billions of dollars.
Even so, Zelensky emphasized that those who were found guilty did not have to be put to death. He said Ukraine does not adhere to Stalinism.
“If there is evidence, the person must be behind bars.”
Ukraine is ranked 116th out of 180 countries in the latest Corruption Perceptions Index released by campaign group Transparency International. Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk via the Telegram application on Sunday said that currently Kyiv depends on law enforcement from corruption.
“External and internal factors mean the country’s survival is starting to depend on Ukraine’s ability to actually crush corrupt social groups.”
