Ukraine Equips Canadian Leopard 2 Tanks with Soviet-Inspired Explosive Reactive Armor

Weapons developments in Ukraine continue to surprise and impress, with the latest addition being a Ukrainian Leopard 2 tank equipped with explosive reactive armor (ERA) bricks. This particular modification, known as the “Kontakt’d” Leopard 2, has been given the designation 2A4V by Oryx, a military analysis group. The “V” in the designation stands for “vzryvnoj” or “explosive,” referring to the added Kontakt-1 ERA bricks that have their origins in Soviet-era tanks such as the T-55MV, T-62MV, T-64BV, T-72BV, and T-80BV.

Interestingly, this Leopard tank is of Canadian origin, as Canada has sent eight of these tanks to support Ukraine’s war effort. ERA is a defensive measure against anti-tank munitions, such as high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) and armor-piercing rounds. It works by detonating on impact before the round hits the tank’s hull, disrupting the weapon’s effects or destroying it outright.

The Leopard 2 already boasts strong protection with its existing armor scheme, but the addition of Kontakt bricks provides further defense against threats like anti-tank guided missiles and rocket-propelled grenades. This modification is a response to the evolving tactics of the conflict, where Russian attack helicopters have been using long-range anti-tank missiles to strike advancing Ukrainian columns. Surviving the first strike from an unseen enemy at long range can be crucial in determining the fate of the vehicle and its crew.

The fact that Ukraine is modifying their donated high-end western armor demonstrates their ability to learn from their losses and rapidly innovate. Adding ERA to Leopard tanks is part of this evolution, and it is worth noting that NATO countries also use ERA for added protection. Ukraine believes that the additional weight and considerations associated with ERA are a worthy trade-off for the enhanced defense it provides.

It is fascinating to witness advanced NATO equipment being modified with capabilities designed by the very foe it was intended to deter. This practice has become increasingly common in the ongoing conflict. As Ukraine’s counteroffensive continues, it will be interesting to see if the use of Kontakt bricks on Ukrainian Leopard 2s and other Western-supplied armor becomes a standard issue.
