Ukraine Demands Exclusion of Russian and Belarusian Athletes from 2024 Paralympic Games

Ukraine is determined to participate in the 2024 Paralympic Games and will demand the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes from the competition.

Source: Suspenseful with reference to the statement of the President of the Paralympic Committee of Ukraine Valery Sushkevich during a press conference on the topic of Russian influence on the international Paralympic movement.

Sushkevich’s direct speech: “We are determined to participate in the Paralympics in Paris.

… We will do everything for the Ukrainian athlete, who is fighting to ensure that his victory is a component of victory over the war, and that they (Russians and Belarusians – ed.) do not participate in the Paralympics.

I don’t want any thought that would involve removing the Ukrainian athlete. When he faced bombings and a shortage of funds, when he went through occupation, stood in front of the “orcs” who searched him, was on the verge of death, when his family and friends died – and he is ready to win in the name of Ukraine, we are obliged to do everything, so that this athlete (competes – ed.).”

Details: At the same time, he noted that Ukraine should focus its efforts on ensuring that the entire civilized Paralympic world does not allow the so-called neutrality procedure, which “allows murderers, rapists and those who support murder and violence,” to the Paralympic Games in Paris.

Updated: In a commentary, UP Sushkevich said that Ukraine initiated the convening of an extraordinary European General Assembly of the European Paralympic Committee.

Sushkevich’s direct speech: “There was our appeal to the European Paralympic Committee with a demand to hold an extraordinary European General Assembly of the European Paralympic Committee with the question of preventing Russia and Belarus from participating in the Paralympic Games in Paris in any status.”

Details: Sushkevich added that the Governing Council has scheduled the assembly to be held in early 2024 in Latvia. According to him, this decision was also supported by the Latvian government.

Background:

Due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian athletes remained outside the 2022 Paralympic Games in Beijing. The full suspension was agreed upon by the International Paralympic Committee. However, on September 29 this year, the International Paralympic Committee announced that it had allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the 2024 Paralympic Games in neutral status. Suspilne notes that the Ukrainian Paralympic team currently has 61 licenses in 9 sports (cycling, rowing, athletics, swimming, boccia, shooting, archery, paracanoeing and table tennis) out of 17 in which it plans to take part in Paralympics 2024.
