I the declaration expressed “deep concern” for peace and security in Ukraine.
– The Security Council recalls that all member states through the UN Charter have committed themselves to resolving international conflicts in a peaceful manner, it is further stated.
The members of the Security Council then expressed strong support for UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ efforts to find a peaceful solution in the country.
Russia also voted in favor of the declaration, which was adopted by all members of the council.
First Ukraine Declaration
The declaration will be the first to be adopted by the Security Council since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.
A wording that expressed support for Guterre’s role as a broker, which was included in an earlier draft, should have been removed from the final version.
Russia is one of the permanent members of the Security Council and thus has a veto. Another Ukraine proposal was stopped by the Russian delegation on Friday. This text condemned the invasion and demanded that Russia’s forces be withdrawn from Ukraine.
