Ukraine Day in Cologne overshadowed by pro-Russian demo

“Ukraine Day” is planned for August 20 in front of the Chocolate Museum. But the pro-Russian activist Elena Kolbasnikova registered a demo for the day – she leads past the festival.

On August 20, Ukrainian children and their parents should actually be able to forget the horrors of war in their country for a few hours – on this day “Ukraine Day” takes place in front of the Chocolate Museum in Cologne. But instead they have to be prepared for ugly scenes and arguments: The pro-Russian activist Elena Kolbasnikova registered a demo for the day on Friday, as the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” first reported.

Together with other demo participants, she wants to drive through Cologne with a motorcade to demonstrate for “peace with Russia”. All this while Russia continues to wage a war of aggression against Ukraine, which has already killed thousands of people in the country. And from which the visitors of “Ukraine Day” fled to find peace.

attempted intimidation

According to the Stadtanzeiger, the demo should start around 12 noon at the Deutzer Werft and then move across the Deutzer Bridge. Your path then leads directly past the chocolate muse via the Rheinuferstraße. The organizer of the “Ukraine Day” told the “Kölner Stadtanzeiger” that she saw an attempt at intimidation.

This is not Kolbasnikova’s first demonstration. Last year she organized the so-called “Russian Course”. She approved of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and was sentenced to a fine for this by the district court of Cologne. Read more about the case here.

Cologne shows solidarity

Like everyone else in Germany, Kolbasnikova has the right to demonstrate. Thus, the city cannot ban the demonstration. However, on Friday evening she showed solidarity with Ukraine and the people who still have to brave the horrors of war there every day.

The solidarity night rally “night4ukriane” will take place on Roncalliplatz from 7.30 p.m. Participating will include Mayor Henriette Reker and the Deputy Prime Minister of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia Mona Neubauer, as well as Ukrainian artists. The night rally is intended to draw attention to the fact that the people of Ukraine do not have a quiet night under the bombardment of Russian missiles.
