In the Russian-occupied Kherson region, 50,000-60,000 people were advised to leave the area. The Ukrainian army has been engaged in an offensive in the southern region for weeks and is slowly moving towards the regional capital. Recently, several reconquered villages.

People can be brought to the southern bank of the Dnieper River from the port of the city of Kherson. “Ferries are used to transfer people to Alyoshki and Hola Pristan,” the administration installed in Russia reported on Telegram. “Temporary accommodation has been set up there where aid workers further determine the journey. They take into account what someone wants.”

Tens of thousands of Ukrainians are evacuated from Kherson by boat

Russia-appointed regional governor Vladimir Saldo says the Russian military must have all means to repel the attack. “For the peace of mind of the military, who know they don’t have to take civilians into account, they need to be moved,” says Saldo. According to him, around 5,000 people have been evacuated. The civil authorities are also called to leave.

According to Saldo, the evacuation will take about six days. Residents can choose a destination in Russia or “new areas,” she says. The latter probably refers to parts of Ukraine conquered by Russia.

Land regained

The Ukrainian army has been making progress for weeks now, taking back a lot of ground, especially along the western bank of the Dnieper River. For Russia, the land they still hold is strategically important, for example for possible further advancement to cities around the Black Sea, such as Odessa or Mykolaiv.

The new commander of the Russian forces in Ukraine, Sergei Surovikin, yesterday warned of a serious Ukrainian attack and also urged evacuation to Kherson. “The Ukrainian regime wants to break through our defenses,” he said. Surovikin called the situation in Ukraine extremely tense.
