The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that pilot Oleksii Mesia died while piloting a fighter jet and repelling a Russian missile attack on August 26.
The circumstances of his death are reported on the Air Force Telegram channel as follows: “He heroically fought his last battle in the sky. On 26 August Oleksii destroyed three cruise missiles and an attack unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) while repelling a massive Russian combined missile and air strike. Oleksii saved the Ukrainians from the deadly Russian missiles. Unfortunately, at the cost of his own life”.
“Four enemy missiles were shot down by airborne weapons,” the Ukrainian General Staff said in a statement.
“On approach (to a target), communication with one of the aircraft was lost. It later turned out that the plane crashed and the pilot was killed,” the general staff said on Telegram, without specifying the name of the pilot or the exact date of the plane’s crash.
