European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen handed over the questionnaire to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenysky during her visit to Kiev on 8 April. “We stand by you and your European dream,” von der Leyen said at the time, promising to speed up the decision-making process.
Kyiv applied for membership of the European Union shortly after Russian troops attacked Ukraine on February 24. The application is currently being examined by the European Commission. The DPA notes that the accession process to join the bloc of 27 countries is long and complicated – even if the EC evaluates the application positively, the candidate country must be approved by all Member States before the start of detailed accession talks.
“Today I can announce that the Ukrainian side has completed the completion of the document,” Zhovkva said on Sunday evening. “We expect the recommendation to be positive, and then everything will depend on the EU member states,” he added.
According to Zhovkva, Ukraine expects to gain candidate status at the European Council on 23-24 June.
