Russia’s losses continue to mount. Ukraine claims to have destroyed a Moscow radar system after just a few hours of use.

Kherson – Im Ukraine war Kiev’s armed forces and the Russian invaders are waging a bitter war over every meter of land. Russia in particular is suffering extremely high losses of personnel, but also of material. Now Russia is said to have lost a brand new radar system that had only been in use in Ukraine for a few hours.

On Tuesday (January 2), Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that the Yastreb-AV artillery reconnaissance radar had been deployed to Ukraine. The system was primarily intended to detect multiple rocket launcher systems, but also howitzers or mortar guns. This according to the state news agency RIA Novosti “Most modern Russian radar system” was intended to “increase the efficiency of artillery fire and survivability on the battlefield,” such as Newsweek quoted the Kremlin. However, this should be over if the reports from Ukraine are correct.

Video purports to show Ukraine attacking Russian radar system

Yastreb-AV had the task of protecting the Russian armed forces from attacks, for example by the HIMARS artillery system. Now it has been destroyed – apparently by a HIMARS attack from Ukraine.

The attack is said to have taken place in the contested Kherson region in southern Ukraine. A video from the Ukrainian special forces on YouTube is said to show the moment of destruction. Footage from a drone shows the vehicle getting into position in a field and the radar before an explosion occurs. A thick cloud of smoke rises above the vehicle.

The Ukrainian armed forces also consider the Yastreb-AV to be Russia’s most modern and capable radar system, as if from one Post on Facebook emerges. The system tracks the trajectory of enemy projectiles and thereby determines the launch location, it is said. These coordinates are then transmitted to your own artillery so that you can shell enemy positions. At the same time, the special command confirmed the attack on the Russian radar system, which was carried out by HIMARS fire together with the 140th separate mechanized brigade. They did not disclose the exact time and place.

Russia is suffering more and more losses

Since the start of the war, Russian forces have not been able to destroy a single one of Ukraine’s 39 HIMARS, reports military expert David Ax from Forbes. The system is occasionally discovered by drones, but the bombardment is usually too slow or by soldiers who are not well trained.

Russia keeps losing weapons systems to Ukrainian attacks, reports Ax – and in an ironic way. Ukraine’s cruise missiles are said to have destroyed S-400 air defense systems that were intended to defend against this very weapon. Ukraine is also targeting Russian vehicles with jammers designed to impair the control of Ukrainian drones. According to Ax, it is mainly drones that destroy these vehicles. (lrg)
