Ukraine Changes Law to Preserve Sperm and Eggs of Soldiers After Death

Feb 7, 2024 at 6:29 PM Update: 44 minutes ago

From now on, sperm and eggs from Ukrainian soldiers will also be preserved if they die at the front. This way, a partner can use it if they wish to have children.

By law, frozen sperm and eggs had to be thrown away. But the Ukrainian parliament changed that law on Wednesday.

Last December, parliament decided that from 2025 the state will pay for the storage of sperm and eggs of soldiers. That law also stated that samples would be removed from donors who have died. This has now been adjusted, so that frozen sperm and eggs from soldiers remain available even after their death.

Young men in particular are fighting against Russia on behalf of Ukraine. That also means that many of them die on the battlefield. That is why there is more attention to fertility policy in Ukraine.

Supporters said the law change was necessary to “preserve the gene pool of the Ukrainian people, which is especially urgent given ongoing Russian aggression.” Experts previously told NU.nl that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to eradicate the Ukrainian identity.

Experts argue for even more adjustments, because every person has the right to “continue his own family.” For example, they argue that posthumously obtaining sperm from dead soldiers is allowed in Israel.

New law to make it easier to call new recruits

The Ukrainian parliament also approved a bill on the deployment of soldiers on Wednesday. The new law sets out, among other things, how much mandatory military training recruits must undergo. It is also recorded how much they are paid and what legal protection they receive during their work.

It has also been established that military personnel are entitled to fifteen days off per year in wartime. Military personnel who are captured and released are entitled to another 90 days before returning to the front, if they wish to do so.

Commander-in-chief Varely Zaluzhny previously asked the government to compulsorily call up 500,000 new recruits. Partly because of this, he was fired by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Parliament has now decided that calling up additional people will become easier. Zelensky still has to sign the law.
