She said she is in favor of granting Ukraine candidate status for EU membership, but for the country to join the union, it must go through all the reforms in terms of the rule of law, a market economy and the fight against corruption. The politician warned officials of the candidate country against “vague interpretation” of these criteria.

A member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany stressed – “there should be no hasty entry”, because then “an EU member cannot be excluded” from the community.

The rapid granting of candidate status to Ukraine “would be an important signal to Moscow that the EU will not be intimidated when it comes to defending our values,” Barley said.

She believes that during the reconstruction after the war, Ukraine “can certainly count on greater solidarity and support from the EU in order to be able to meet the conditions of entry.”

“I’m almost sure that all EU member states would like to smooth the way for Ukraine to join the European Union. Yes, there are different opinions about the time horizon, but basically everyone is unanimous about the goal,” the politician summed up.
